Ottawa's New Green Educational Centre For The Building Trades
Designed for LEED platinum certification, the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence is 65 per cent more energy efficient than the benchmark set by the Model National Energy Code for Buildings. While the 17,069-square-metre building relies on conventional high-efficiency mechanical equipment, it also has what the college bills as Ottawa’s largest green roof. The undulating roof – the size of one-and-a-half football fields – consists of grasses and small shrubs that will help offset the sun’s heat to lower the surrounding air temperature and meet the building’s cooling requirements.
