Our firm was engaged by Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) to complete interior design and renovation work for Health Canada. Phase I began on three floors of a thirteen-storey, 1970 office building. The design consisted of offices, meeting rooms, an employee assistance call centre, a medical clinic, a secured vaccine and medical supply storage, and testing facilities. The clinic component includes doctors’ and nurses’ offices with attached examination rooms. Adjacent to the clinic is the centralized research and testing facilities such as the X-ray, pulmonary, vision, audiometric, and electro cardiogram rooms.

Following the successful completion of Health Canada Phase I, interior design services for Health Canada Phase II were completed. The second phase involved renovation work, on two floors, consisting of open workspaces, enclosed offices, and meeting rooms.

The project objective was to create a work place that promotes interaction and collaboration among various work groups. In addition, the office environment was to be flexible and comfortable, with optimum layout configurations of a combination of open and enclosed offices, clinical, and other medical testing facilities.

As prime consultant, our Firm provided the following:

• Space planning and optimization

• Design and programming

• Furniture plans selection and inventory

• Construction documents

• Coordination of security and telecommunications requirements

• Coordination of consultants

• Cost estimate and schedule control

• Tender award, contract administration and deficiency reports

The consultant team implemented energy-efficient lighting systems with environmentally friendly ballasts and fixtures. One such product is the ALTO 4-foot T8 fluorescent lamps. They are the first fluorescent lamps to pass the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) test for non-hazardous waste. The lamps have more than 80% reduction of mercury content compared to standard fluorescent lamps.

Although the project was under a tight budget, the enhancement of the overall quality of the space, with new finishes and material upgrades, was successful. Progressive development and construction schedules were created and monitored to ensure that the project was completed on time.
