École secondaire catholique Pierre-Savard - Phases I, II, III and IV
Ottawa, Ontario
Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est
The goal of the project was to transform the existing elementary school into a secondary school that offers a comprehensive program to approximately 700 students enrolled in grades seven to twelve. The Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est, requested a multi-disciplinary facility that provides a collaborative learning environment that is sustainable. The program provides students with essential academic services as well as programs that focus on technology, physical education and the performing arts.

To accommodate the Schoolboard’s funding schedule the project was developed in 5 phases, during which time, the school was occupied by students. The master plan concept had to take into consideration the fact that the school was continuously used by the students and the community. Future phases contemplated in the Master Plan include a 450-seat performing arts auditorium that will be shared with the community.

A new interior street is the central organizing element that links all the public ground floor programs and provides access to the classrooms located on the upper floors. A new cafeteria and library are key elements of the addition and provide a signature element that respect the original high school building yet suggest a modern education.

The cafeteria is located at the main entrance, the “pivot” point of the interior street and is enhanced by a two-storey lobby. The clerestory skylight above the atrium provides full spectrum light to the interior classrooms on the upper level.

The school was designed using LEED Design Guidelines. EJC team’s in-house LEED Professionals facilitated a "Green Development Workshop". Sustainable design concepts: Sustainable Site Planning, Water Efficiency, Energy Efficiency, Conservation of Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality and Innovation in the Design Process were implemented into the design. This project is able to obtain LEED Certification if desired by the Owner.
