École Jeanne-Sauvé, which incorporates elementary and intermediate programs as well as a child care centre, was the first school commissioned by Le Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario. This school located in a residential neighbourhood in Cumberland is connected to adjacent parkland by sports facilities and playgrounds, that were developed as a joint venture with the Township of Cumberland.

The design of the school also accommodates community activities. The key element of the design is a centrally located atrium that serves as a focal point, and connects the major school function areas such as the administration, the library, the cafeteria, the gym, and three wings of classrooms.

The main entrance canopy, with its sky-lit roof, provides a sheltered area for children while they wait for their buses. Designed as the “Children’s Castle”, the friendly character of the building elevations is created by soft brick colours and astraglaze patterns, which are continued inside the main atrium.
